Shrine Cemetery, Bucquoy (P. de C.)

Details

Bucquoy is a village and commune in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais, ten miles South of Arras. The village was occupied by the 7th Division on the 17th March, 1917, and it was the scene of very heavy fighting in March and April, 1918.

Shrine Cemetery is on the Western outskirts of the village, on the South side of the road to Hannescamps. It is named from a crucifix standing on a mound on its West side. It was begun by the 46th (North Midland) Division in March, 1917, and enlarged by other units in August, 1918; and after the Armistice forty graves were concentrated into it, mainly from Le Barque and Eaucourt -l'Abbé
. It now contains the graves of 73 soldiers from the United Kingdom, eight from Australia and seven from New Zealand; one man whose unit is not known; and one German prisoner. Forty-one graves are unnamed.
