Owl Trench Cemetery, Hebuterne (P de C)

Details

Hebuterne is a village and commune in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais, between Arras and Albert; and Owl Trench Cemetery is 1½ miles East of the village. on the South side of the road from Gommecourt to Puisieux.

The village of Hébuterne was in British hands from 1915 to March 1918, and even after the latter date it was partly held; but the Eastern part of the commune was in German hands until February, 1917, and again in the summer of 1918. "Owl Trench" was a German cross-trench before Rossignol Wood, raided by the 4th New Zealand Rifle Brigade on the 15th July, 1918, and cleared by the 1st Auckland Regiment five days later; but the cemetery contains the graves of men who fell on the 27th February, 1917, in an attack on German rearguards by the 31st Division. Row A is a big grave in which are buried 46 soldiers from the United Kingdom, of whom 43 belonged to the 16th West Yorks; and seven other soldiers from the United Kingdom are buried in Row B. Ten are unidentified.
