Longueval Road Cemetery (Somme)

Details

Longueval was the scene of furious fighting in 1916, lasting from the 14th to the 29th July, when the village was cleared by the 5th Division. It was lost in March 1918, and retaken by the 38th(Welsh) Division and the Carabineers on the 28th August, 1918.

Longueval Road Cemetery was begun in September 1916, near a Dressing Station known as "Longeuval Alley", or "Longueval Water Point", and it was used until January 1917. Further burials were made in August and September 1918. The graves numbered 171 at the date of the Armistice; and other were added in 1923 - 24 by concentrations from a wide area round Longueval

There are now over 200, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, over one-fifth are unidentified and special memorials are erected to 3 Soldiers from the United Kingdom, known or beleived to buried among them.
