Hannescamps is a village and commune
in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais, immediately North-East of Foncquevillers.
It is seven and a half miles from Miraumont station, on the main line
from Paris to Line. The Churchyard is on the West side of the village,
and the New Military Cemetery is in fact an extension of the Churchyard
to the South-West.
Until June, 1916, and again in 1918,
the village was just behind the British front line.
HANNESCAMPS NEW MILITARY CEMETERY
was begun in March, 1916, and used until February, 1917 and again in
March, 1918. Thirty graves were brought in from the immediate neighbourhood
after the Armistice. The cemetery covers an area of 734 square yards,
and it contains the graves of 99 soldiers from the United Kingdom and
two men of the Indian Labour Corps. A special memorial is erected to
a soldier from the United Kingdom, known to be buried in one of the
nineteen unidentified graves.
The cemetery is bounded by a brick
wall and a border of flowering shrubs. It stands in pleasant, wooded
country.
