Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme

Dernancourt is a village and commune in the Department of the Somme, a mile and a half South of Albert. The Communal Cemetery is a little West of the village, across the railway line; and the Extension is on the North-west side of the Communal Cemetery.

The XV Corps Main Dressing Station was formed at Dernancourt in August, 1916, and in that month the Extension was opened. The 45th and 1st/1st South Midland Clearing Stations came in September, 1916, and remained until March, 1917; the 3rd Australian was here in March and April, 1917, and the 56th from April, 1917 to February, 1918. The 3rd Casualty Clearing Station came in March, 1918; but on 26th March, Dernancourt was evacuated by the British Forces, and the Extension remained in enemy hands until the recapture of Dernancourt on the 9th August by the 12th Division and the 33rd American Division. In September it was again used by the 47th, 48th and 55th Casualty Clearing Stations under the name of "Edgehill" (due to the raising ground on the North West).

The Extension contained at the Armistice more than 1,700 graves. It was then enlarged by the concentration into Plots VI, VIII and X of 410 graves from small cemeteries and isolated positions in the immediate neighbourhood. It now covers an area of 6,792 Square yards. I t now contains the graves of 1,502 soldiers, airmen and sailors and Marines of the Royal Naval Division, from the United Kingdom; 418 soldiers from Australia, 51 from New Zealand, 33 from South Africa, 8 from Canada, 1 from India, 1 from the British West Indies, and 112 whose unit in our forces could not be ascertained; one official of the Y.M.C.A.; four men of the Indian and three of the Chinese Labour Corps; and three German prisoners. One hundred and eighty graves are those of unidentified men, but 28 officers and men are known or believed to be buried among the graves and are specially commemorated.

Two Australian soldiers, who were buried at Albert Road Cemetery, Buire-sur-Ancre, and whose graves could not be found, are commemorated by special headstones.

The 49th Australian Infantry Battalion erected in the Extension two wooden memorials to their officers and men who fell in the neighbourhood in March and April, 1918.

The Extension is bounded on three sides by red brick walls and on the road side by a hedge and it is planted with limes and cherry trees.

The following are particulars of the more important graveyards concentrated into the Extension:

Moor Cemetery, Edgehill, Dernancourt, was about half a mile West, near the top of the hill. It contained the graves of 42 soldiers from the United Kingdom who fell on the 23rd-25th March, 1918.

Albert Road Cemetery, Buire-sur-Ancre, was nearly two miles West, on the straight road from Amiens to Albert. It contained the graves of 65 soldiers from the United Kingdom and 33 from Australia, who fell in April - August, 1918. It was made by the Australian units and by the 58th (London) and 12th Divisions.

An extract from the London Gazette No. 30967 dated 18th Oct. 1918 records the following: "For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty in attack when the advance was much impeded by hostile machine guns concealed in crops and shell holes. Sgt. Harris led his section against one of these, capturing it and killing seven of the enemy. Later, on two successive occasions, he attacked single-handed two enemy machine guns which were causing heavy casualties and holding up the advance. He captured the first gun and killed the crew, but was himself killed when attacking the second one. It was largely due to the great courage and initiative of this gallant N.C.O. that the advance of the Battalion was continued without delay and undue casualties. Throughout the operations, he showed a total disregard for his own personal safety, and set a magnificent example to all ranks." 8.J.20
